Montgomery County is located directly north of Houston in the Piney Woods region of Texas. Given its subtropical climate, it's little wonder that air conditioners in the region break down more frequently than heaters. Changing your filter on a regular basis, keeping shrubs, tall grass, and ant mounds away from your condenser unit, and having your unit inspected and serviced each spring can go a long way towards extending its lifespan.
Located at the southern edge of Tornado Alley, Montgomery County is subject to dramatic, sometimes violent thunderstorms. Close lightning strikes and power flashing on and off during thunderstorms can damage your unit. During severe thunderstorms it's a good idea to shut off your air conditioner. While doing so does not guarantee that your unit will go unharmed, it greatly reduces the risk of damage. Likewise, should your power go out, shut off your air conditioner and leave it off until the power has been restored. Sometimes power surges accompany power startups and can damage your unit.
While heaters do not work nearly as hard as air conditioners in our region, if you have a gas furnace, you should have it inspected annually to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
